Review: I am not a big beer guy but I do enjoy darker beers when I decide to partake. As a former Oregonian I had fallen in love with the Black Butte Porter coming out of Deschutes Brewing in Bend Oregon. When I heard they decided to take an unhoped version of the beer and distill and then age it, I was incredibly excited. Porters are known for their roasted chocolate notes and the comes through in spades in the whiskey. Chocolate cake and caramel are all over the nose and palate. Paired with some chocolate bitters and a splash of simple syrup and you have one of my favorite old fashions. Even at $65 it is a bottle worth keeping on the shelf just to see how interesting American Whiskies can be. Cheers!

My Rating: Stock it. A fantastic and unique whiskey.

May the miles you hike be filled with wonder and the glasses you raise be filled with whiskey.

Cheers!

Rating scale:

-Spit: Don’t bother with this one. If a friend gives you a dram of it, are they even your friend?

-Shoot: Good enough to get you drunk.

-Sip: Tasty enough to enjoy neat or on the rocks.

-Stock: I’d recommend keeping a bottle on hand.
