Review: As a self-proclaimed fan boy of Jefferson’s Ocean Aged at Sea Bourbon it seemed like a no brainer to pick up a bottle of Come Hell or High Water from Pilot House Distilling in Oregon when I learned they were taking their two year old American Single Malt and attaching it to fishing ships which would spend at least 6 months aging at the mercy of the sea. The first batch I picked up was Batch 9 which was a delicious drink that did not make it more than a few weeks once opened. Batch 10 was cracked with friends form Florida while still wet from the Pacific Ocean from which the whiskey came. Upon pouring the first glasses I immediately smelled bananas and sweetness. That came through in spades on the taste. I am a big fan of banana notes in whiskey, Jack Daniels Eric Church comes to mind, and it is not a note I have gotten previously in anything other than bourbons (you read that right Jack Fans!). The maltiness is still present on the taste and there is a slight ethanol sting despite the 80 proof. I picked up my bottle of Batch 10 from the Astoria Distillery in a gift set with 2 etched Glencairn glasses for $80 (bottle size is only 375ml) and I hope to find another bottle as a back up since I enjoy this American Single Malt so much. Cheer!
My Rating: Stock it if you like bananas!
May the miles you hike be filled with wonder and the glasses you raise be filled with whiskey.
Cheers!
Rating scale:
-Spit: Don’t bother with this one. If a friend gives you a dram of it, are they even your friend?
-Shoot: Good enough to get you drunk.
-Sip: Tasty enough to enjoy neat or on the rocks.
-Stock: I’d recommend keeping a bottle on hand.
