Review: My first “real” backpacking backpack was an Osprey Atmos 65 that I bought from REI. I loved how many pockets it had and all of the organization they offered. Then I took it on a handful of trips and found my self constantly zipping and unzipping various pockets to try and find what ever small item I was looking for.

Then I stumbled upon Ultralight Backpacking and ordered a Zpacks Arc Blast backpack which had only a couple pockets. In order to keep my gear organized and dry I decided to also order some Dynema roll top dry bags. After using them on my first long trip I fell in love with how easy it was to find what I was looking for. Everyone who backpacks is different and what works for me may not work for you. That being said I love that all of my food and cookware is in one bag and all of my clothes and sleep kit are in their bag. I backpack in the Pacific Northwest which is often wet and I like that there is an added layer of protection for my down items. Because of this I will forever praise the stuff sack, the dry bag and the ditty and zippered pouches. Don’t get too carried away with them as every item does not need its own bag but having a couple sure makes things easier for me. Cheers!

My Rating: Buy it. From a cheap basic Walmart bag to a custom Hilltop Packs bag there will always be a couple in my backpack.

Rating scale:

-Bypass: This isn’t worth the money.

-Borrow: Handy but may or may not be worth your money.

-Buy: Get one. You’ll love it!

May the miles you hike be filled with wonder and the glasses you raise be filled with whiskey.

Cheers!
