Review: I have long been a fan of McCarthy’s smokey Islay Scotch style American Single Malt. It doesn’t hurt that the first American Single Malt was created in my then home state and is reminiscent of my favorite Scotch (Lagavulin). This latest limited release is finished in Sherry Casks which seems to add an almond and fruity characteristic to this very smokey cask strength whiskey. The whiskey spends its first 6 years in new Oregon Oak and taste and feels much older. That being said it is $60 more than the standard 6 year offering which is only 100 proof but I am not sure the price jump is worth it. It is nice to see some finished American Single Malt’s however it just doesn’t live up to the $150 price tag in my opinion. At a cheaper price it would receive a much better rating.

My Rating: Sip it. Worth trying as it is unique and I hope more finished options come from McCarthy’s. However that price point just makes it tough to say stock it.

May the miles you hike be filled with wonder and the glasses you raise be filled with whiskey.

Cheers!

Rating scale:

-Spit: Don’t bother with this one. If a friend gives you a dram of it, are they even your friend?

-Shoot: Good enough to get you drunk.

-Sip: Tasty enough to enjoy neat or on the rocks.

-Stock: I’d recommend keeping a bottle on hand.
