Review: Black Butte Porter from Deschutes Brewing in Bend, OR has been my favorite beer for quite some time. I love how malty and sweet it is as I am not a big fan of hops. When I heard Bend Distilling was taking an unhoped version of the beer and distilling and aging it, I jumped at the chance to pick up a bottle. A few years later they released a 5 year old cask strength version of the Black Butte Whiskey and I picked up a bottle as soon as they became available in my area. Dark chocolate notes and burnt sugars are present on the nose and palate. If you go into Black Butte Whiskey expecting any kind of traditional Bourbon or Single Malt characteristics you will be left wanting. However, it is a great example of what can be done when you toss out the rule book and start experimenting. It is as close to s’more as I have found and makes for an incredible Chocolate Old Fashioned when mixed with sugar and chocolate bitters. One of my favorite cool weather whiskies as the proof will warm you and the taste is sweet and approachable. If you want to get out of the traditional whiskies this may be worth picking up. Cheers!
My Rating: Stock it!
May the miles you hike be filled with wonder and the glasses you raise be filled with whiskey.
Cheers!
