Review: Born in Kentucky in 1819, Ben made his way to Weston Missouri as a teenager where he eventually found love and started a bourbon distillery in 1856 with his brother David. The idea came from the limestone wells found throughout his property. As a Kentucky native, he knew that was what made Kentucky Bourbon great.
Holladay made his fortunes in transportation. At one point he owned the Pony Express as well as the Overland Trail Stage Coach Company which he eventually sold to Wells Fargo. In August of 1868 Holladay moved to Oregon where he got into the train business.
His impact in Oregon can be seen in Portland along NE Holladay Street and the town of Seaside Oregon which was named after Holladay’s “Seaside House” estate which sat where the current day Seaside Golf Course is.
Holladay died on July 8th 1887 and is buried at the Mount Calvary Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.
The Holladay name lives on with his name sake Bourbon distilled in Missouri on the property he purchased over 150 years ago. The Bottled-in-Bond bourbon is approachable and friendly offering the classic notes of sweet vanilla and toasted wood. A bit spendy for a younger and very drinkable bourbon but one worth trying out and possibly picking up a bottle of yourself. Cheers!
My Rating: Sip it!
May the miles you hike be filled with wonder and the glasses you raise be filled with whiskey.
Cheers!
